Part Three of 'Bellerophon's journey' illustrates the tragic moment that the hero meets his demise. Fuelled by his newfound fame, Bellerophon dared to ascend Olympus by riding Pegasus towards the summit. This act of hubris enraged Zeus, prompting the god to send a gadfly to sting his winged horse, causing it to buck and throw Bellerophon off.

Digitally enhanced vintage Walter Crane illustration, originally created for Nathaniel Hawthorne's storybook, 'A Wonder Book For Girls And Boys'.
