Part Two of the 'Eleventh Labour of Hercules' shows the Greek hero approaching Atlas at the westernmost point of the world. It's here that Atlas asks Hercules to shoulder the heavens for him while he retrieves the golden apples from his daughters, the Hesperides nymphs. However, realising this help would void his Labour, and perhaps fearing that Atlas would not return, Hercules quickly asks Atlas to briefly take the heavens back while he gets more comfortable. He then flees, leaving the titan to continue his eternal punishment.

Digitally-enhanced vintage Walter Crane illustration, originally created for Nathaniel Hawthorne's storybook 'A Wonder Book For Girls And Boys'.
