A print of Walter Crane's Strangers: Gods Entertained — an illustration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892), depicting the moment when the elderly couple Philemon and Baucis welcome the gods Zeus and Hermes into their cottage, not knowing who their guests truly are.

The myth is preserved in Ovid's Metamorphoses: the gods, walking the earth in disguise, are turned away from every door in Phrygia except one — the poor cottage of an old, pious couple who share what little food they have. For their kindness Philemon and Baucis are spared the flood that destroys their neighbours, granted a single final wish — to die together — and transformed at the end of their lives into intertwined trees. Hawthorne adapted the story for Victorian children; Crane illustrated the quiet scene of the welcome.

Walter Crane (1845–1915) was one of the defining Arts & Crafts illustrators of the late Victorian era. His plates for Hawthorne remain among the most widely reproduced images of Greek myth in English children's literature. The companion plate: Strangers: Gods in Disguise.
