The Birth of Venus; an illustrative painting of the love goddess rising from the sea, by Dutch artist Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1924).

With perhaps the most obscure origin story in Greek mythos, Aphrodite was said to be born from the sea foam created after Cronos cut off the genitals of Uranus. And according to some versions, she arrived to land on an open scallop shell, which we often see feature in later depictions of the goddess (or her Roman equivalent, Venus).
