A black and white print of the Farnese Hercules — the colossal, ten-foot marble statue of Hercules leaning on his club after completing the twelve labours, the golden apples of the Hesperides just visible in his hand behind his back. The marble was signed by Glykon of Athens in the early 3rd century AD, a Roman copy after a bronze by Lysippos of Sicyon from the 4th century BC.
The statue was unearthed in the 16th century in the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and entered the Farnese collection — hence the modern name. It is now held at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. Its pose, once seen, is difficult to forget: the hero's exhausted weight falls across the club, his head is bowed, his massive frame sags in a quiet register that is almost tender.
Lysippos's invention was the emotional turn — Hercules not at the moment of triumph, but in the long aftermath, the apples won, the labours done, the body at the end of its strength. In black and white, the colossal marble resolves to pure form: the fall of muscle, the diagonal of the club, the silence of the finished task.
