A black and white print of the Boxer at Rest — a Hellenistic bronze now at the Palazzo Massimo in Rome, sometimes called the Terme Boxer or the Boxer of the Quirinal. Found in 1885 buried on the slopes of the Quirinal Hill, it is one of the finest surviving bronze sculptures of the Greek world, dated to the late 4th or 1st century BC.
The figure sits exhausted after a fight. His hands are wrapped in caesti, the leather and metal boxing straps of antiquity. His face is broken — a cauliflower ear, cuts above the brow, a nose flattened by repeated blows. The sculpture's realism is merciless and unheroic, a radical contrast with the idealised athletes of the earlier classical canon.
In black and white, the bronze's surface — pitted, patinated, seamed where ancient repairs were made — reads with the clarity of archaeological photography. It is one of the defining works of Hellenistic realism, and a rare example of ancient bronze that survived the melt-downs of later antiquity.
