‘Ratto di Proserpina’ by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Admired for its striking realism, Bernini’s ‘The Abduction of Proserpina’ depicts the scene of Pluto grabbing his promised bride; carrying her away from the mortal realm to the underworld (Hades and Persephone in Greek mythos). This masterpiece is full of the dynamism and drama that defined the Baroque era (and Greco-Roman mythology itself), which we see perfectly encapsulated in the lifelike detail of Pluto’s hands. Enhanced by a soft contrast of black and white, this print captures both the intimacy and intensity of the moment, as well as the genius skill of the sculptor.
