A print of Odilon Redon's Centaur — the French Symbolist's rendering of the half-horse, half-man creatures of Greek myth, treated in Redon's characteristic charcoal-black Noirs manner.
The centaurs of Greek mythology were the wild-tempered race born of Ixion and the cloud-nymph Nephele, roaming the mountains of Thessaly — unstable, dangerous, and yet fathers of some of the most learned figures of the myths (Chiron, tutor of Achilles and of Asclepius, was a centaur). They served as the standing example of the doubled nature of man: civilisation and animal impulse housed in a single body.
Odilon Redon (1840–1916) spent the first half of his career working almost entirely in black — charcoal, lithograph, etching — in a body of work he called the Noirs. His centaurs, sphinxes, dream-heads and half-seen mythological figures are the pictorial heart of French Symbolism and a direct influence on Gauguin, Matisse, and the Surrealists who followed him.
