A print of Walter Crane's Bellerophon at the Fountain — one of the illustrations from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Bellerophon sits by a spring, the bridle given to him by Athena in his hand, waiting for the winged horse Pegasus to descend to drink.
The scene is the hinge of the Bellerophon myth. In order to slay the Chimera, the hero first had to tame Pegasus; Athena had given him a golden bridle in a dream and told him that Pegasus came every day to drink at the fountain at Pirene. Hawthorne's retelling, and Crane's illustration, hold the moment of patient waiting rather than the battle — the stillness before the magic arrives.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) brought the decorative line of the Arts & Crafts movement into the children's book, and his Hawthorne plates are among the most widely reproduced Greek mythology images of the Victorian era. Other Bellerophon plates in this series: Riding Pegasus and The Chimera.
