'Ugolino and his Sons' by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux

This black and white photograph offers a poignant close-up of Carpeaux's expressive masterpiece of Romantic-era sculpture. The statue depicts a story from Dante's Inferno (Canto XXXIII), in which 13th century Pisan count Ugolino della Gherardesca is imprisoned with his children. The photo centres on the hands of one son, gripping his father’s leg in a desperate embrace, highlighting the statue's incredible lifelike detail. Visible in the corner of the frame is Ugolino’s leg iron, locked around his ankle – a stark reminder of the grim fate at play. This powerful image captures the raw emotion of the sculpture in a single dramatic gesture of intense despair.
