A print of John Singer Sargent's Garden — a watercolour of a Mediterranean garden by one of the great painters of the Belle Époque, treated in the loose, luminous wash that defined Sargent's late work away from the portrait studio.
Sargent's watercolour gardens — Italian villas, Spanish courtyards, the pergolas of Corfu and the Villa Torlonia — are among the finest modern records of European garden architecture. He worked almost always out of doors, very quickly, pushing watercolour close to the transparency and chromatic intensity of oil. The subjects are rarely the obvious set-pieces; more often they are fragments — a balustrade, a fountain wall, a shaft of light across gravel — caught as a painter's problem rather than as a tourist's view.
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the defining portrait painter of the late-Victorian and Edwardian era and, in his later years, a restless and brilliant watercolourist. His travelling watercolours through Italy, Spain, the Alps and the Middle East are the most relaxed and painterly body of work of his career.
