A print of Marchetti's Venus — a 19th century Italian reproductive engraving of the goddess of love, one of the standard subjects of the whole Western print tradition after the antique.
Venus — Aphrodite in the Greek — is the Olympian goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and generation. Her canonical sculpted types run from the Aphrodite of Knidos of Praxiteles in the 4th century BC through the Venus de Milo and the Capitoline Venus into the whole Roman and Renaissance repertoire: the bather surprised at the pool, the modest Venus, the Venus rising from the sea, the Venus reclining. By the 19th century every print publisher with pretensions carried her in some version; she was the most commercially dependable figure in the whole mythological canon.
The reproductive engraving tradition to which this print belongs — line-engraved plates after celebrated paintings and sculptures — was the 19th century's primary way of disseminating great art to households that would never see the original.
