A print of Marchetti's The Three Graces — a 19th century Italian reproductive engraving of the three daughters of Zeus, the classical personifications of charm, beauty and grace who form one of the most-repeated motifs in the whole of European art.
The Graces — Charites in Greek — are usually named Aglaia (splendour), Euphrosyne (mirth) and Thalia (good cheer), and from their earliest appearances in archaic sculpture they are shown as three nude female figures linked in an arm-in-arm group, most often with the outer two facing forward and the central one turned away. The composition was fixed by a Roman marble type known from Pompeii and the Piccolomini Library in Siena; Raphael, Botticelli, Rubens, Canova and Thorvaldsen all returned to it; reproductive engravers of the 19th century distributed those high-art treatments back out into middle-class households in thousands of plates.
The reproductive engraving tradition to which this print belongs — line-engraved plates after celebrated paintings and sculptures — was the 19th century's primary way of disseminating great art to households that would never see the original.
