A print of Selene and Endymion — one of the quiet and romantic subjects of Greek mythology, the moon goddess who descends nightly to the cave of her sleeping mortal lover.
Endymion was a shepherd of Mount Latmos in Caria whose beauty caught Selene's eye. In most versions of the myth, Selene asked Zeus to grant him eternal sleep so that he would never age and she could return to him night after night, unchanging, through all her phases. The couple's fifty daughters are the Menae — the personifications of the months of the moon. It is one of the softer myths in the Greek corpus, a story of love as a quiet return rather than a violent abduction, and it was painted endlessly from Roman Pompeii onward.
The story entered the European imagination through Ovid and Apollonius and was given its definitive Romantic treatment in Keats' long poem Endymion (1818), which opens with the much-quoted line, "A thing of beauty is a joy for ever."
