A print of Balestra's Paris — an Italian Baroque engraving of the Trojan prince whose abduction of Helen began the Trojan War, drawn in the muscular, classicising figure style of the 17th and 18th century Italian schools.
Paris — also called Alexandros in Homer — was the second son of King Priam of Troy. The war came from a single choice of his: on Mount Ida, asked to decide which of three goddesses was the most beautiful, he chose Aphrodite over Hera and Athena because Aphrodite bribed him with Helen of Sparta, already married to Menelaus. He carried Helen off to Troy; the Greeks came to take her back; the city fell ten years later. The Judgement of Paris and the hand-off of Helen were among the most painted subjects of the European tradition from antiquity onward, and a reliable subject for the Italian Baroque print trade.
The Italian Baroque engraving tradition — reproductive and original plates produced in Rome, Venice and Bologna from roughly 1600 to 1800 — was one of the great working vocabularies of European art, carried across the continent on the currents of the Grand Tour.
