A print of Muller's Mercury and Psyche — a reproductive engraving of the moment the messenger god lifts the mortal princess Psyche from the earth and carries her up to Olympus, the closing scene of the most famous love story in Greco-Roman fable.
The tale survives in full in Apuleius' 2nd century Latin novel The Golden Ass. Psyche, a mortal princess secretly married to Cupid, breaks a promise not to look on her husband and loses him; Venus sets her four impossible tasks; she completes them, descends to the underworld, and is at last forgiven. In the closing scene, Mercury — the messenger-god, guide of souls — lifts Psyche from the earth and carries her up to the Olympian assembly, where Jupiter grants her immortality so she can be reunited with Cupid as an equal. The subject was a favourite of Neoclassical sculpture and of 19th century reproductive engraving, both of which treated it as a fable of the soul's ascent.
