A print of Matham's Mars — a Dutch Mannerist engraving of the Roman god of war from the Haarlem circle around 1600, drawn in the long-limbed, torqued figure style that defined Dutch print design at the turn of the 17th century.

Mars was the Roman god of war and — crucially, in a way his Greek counterpart Ares was not — the father of Romulus, the city's founder. That double role as war-god and city-progenitor made him one of the most important figures of the Roman pantheon, second only to Jupiter in official cult. Dutch Mannerist engravers, working in the generation that took Haarlem from a provincial town to one of the great print centres of Europe, returned to Mars repeatedly as a vehicle for muscular anatomy, elaborate armour and the decorative ornament of the military attribute.

Jacob Matham (1571–1631) was a Dutch engraver working in Haarlem, the stepson and foremost pupil of Hendrick Goltzius and, from 1604, his successor at the head of the Goltzius workshop. His prints — after Goltzius, after his own designs, and after other Haarlem and Italian masters — were among the most widely circulated in late Mannerist Europe.
