A print of Étienne Baudet's Hesperides — a 17th century French line engraving treating one of the quieter corners of Greek mythology, the nymphs who tend the garden of golden apples at the western edge of the world.
The Hesperides — their number varies from three to seven across different sources — were the daughters of evening, nymphs who guarded the golden apples that had been Hera's wedding gift from Gaia. The garden lay beyond the ocean in the far west, watched also by the hundred-headed dragon Ladon. Fetching three of the apples was the eleventh labour of Heracles — and the image of the nymphs, the apple tree, and the coiling dragon became one of the stock subjects of Baroque and Neoclassical mythological painting.
Étienne Baudet (c. 1636–1711) was a French engraver working in Paris in the second half of the 17th century, best known for his reproductive engravings after Poussin and after the antique marbles of Rome. His work belongs to the great 17th century project of making the antique portable.
