A black and white print from Giovanni Folo's engraving after Antonio Canova's Hercules and Lichas — the Neoclassical marble in which the dying Hercules, maddened by the poisoned tunic sent to him by Deianira, hurls the innocent messenger Lichas into the Euboean Sea.

The story comes from the end of Ovid and Sophocles: Hercules receives a tunic dipped in the blood of the centaur Nessus from his wife Deianira, believing it a love charm; the blood is poison, and Hercules, in his agony, blames Lichas for delivering it. He seizes the boy by the ankle and flings him over the cliffs. Canova's marble, carved between 1795 and 1815, is a violent departure from his usual lyrical calm — the only truly Baroque composition in his sculpted output, and a deliberate homage to Bernini.

Folo's engraving translated Canova's marble into print for European circulation, as was common for major Neoclassical works in the early 19th century. In black and white, the engraver's linework brings the dynamic twist of the composition — Hercules' contorted back, Lichas' flung-out body — forward with graphic clarity.
