A print of the Deification of Hercules — the apotheosis of the greatest of the Greek heroes, his ascent from his burning pyre on Mount Oeta to the company of the Olympian gods.
Hercules' death is one of the most elaborately told of all classical stories. Poisoned by the Hydra-tainted tunic his wife Deianira sent him in the belief it was a love charm, the dying hero had himself carried up Mount Oeta and laid on a great pyre, and ordered Philoctetes to set it alight. The mortal part of him burned away; the immortal part, inherited from Zeus, was carried up to Olympus, where Hera finally relented of her old hatred and gave him her daughter Hebe — goddess of youth — as bride. The moment of ascent, with the hero borne aloft through smoke and cloud as the gods come down to meet him, is one of the canonical set-pieces of ceiling painting in the European Baroque, from Caracci onward.
The apotheosis of Hercules would become the template for Roman imperial apotheosis and, through that, for centuries of European ruler imagery.
