A print of Marchetti's Cupid and Psyche — a 19th century Italian reproductive engraving treating the most famous love story of Greco-Roman fable, the god of love and the mortal princess whose name means "soul".
The tale survives in full only in Apuleius' 2nd century Latin novel The Golden Ass. Psyche, a princess so beautiful that Venus grows jealous, is secretly married to Cupid on the condition that she never look upon him. Her sisters goad her into breaking the promise; she holds a lamp over him as he sleeps, wakes him with a drop of spilled oil, and loses him. Venus sets her four impossible tasks; she completes them with the help of animals, ants and towers, descends to the underworld, and in the end is made immortal and reunited with her husband. The myth was a favourite of Neoclassical sculpture and of 19th century engraving, both of which treated it as a fable of the soul's trials in search of love.
The reproductive engraving tradition to which this print belongs — line-engraved plates after celebrated paintings and sculptures — was the 19th century's primary way of disseminating great art to households that would never see the original.
