A print of Castor and Pollux — the Dioscuri of Greek mythology, twin brothers and patrons of horsemen, boxers, sailors and travellers, and one of the central fraternal pairs of classical myth.

The twins were born to Leda, queen of Sparta, after Zeus came to her in the form of a swan on the same night she lay with her mortal husband Tyndareus. Pollux (Polydeuces) was the immortal son of Zeus; Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus; they were inseparable in life. When Castor was killed in a cattle raid, Pollux asked his father to share his own immortality with his brother, and Zeus set them together among the stars as the constellation Gemini. Their cult was particularly strong at Sparta and, later, at Rome, where the Temple of Castor and Pollux stood in the Forum; sailors sang to them in storms, and the twin flames of St Elmo's fire were said to be their presence at the mast-tops.

The Dioscuri are among the most-repeated figures in European sculpture and coinage, and the great Roman Dioscuri groups on the Quirinal and at the Campidoglio are a standing Roman reference.
