A print of Étienne Baudet's Bust of Minerva — a 17th century French line engraving after an antique bust of the Roman goddess of wisdom, of the kind Baudet produced to transmit the marbles of Rome to the rest of Europe.
Minerva was the Roman counterpart of the Greek Athena — goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, craft and the arts. Together with Jupiter and Juno she made up the Capitoline Triad, the three great deities of the Roman state cult, whose temple stood atop the Capitoline Hill. Her iconography followed the Greek — helmet, spear, aegis, owl — and by the Renaissance she had become the standard personification of learning itself, the figure who presides over academies and libraries across European art.
Étienne Baudet (c. 1636–1711) was a French engraver working in Paris in the second half of the 17th century, best known for his reproductive engravings after Poussin and after the antique marbles of Rome. His work belongs to the great 17th century project of making the antique portable.
