A print of Étienne Baudet's Bust of Hadrian — a 17th century French line engraving after an antique bust of the Roman emperor, of the kind Baudet and his Parisian contemporaries produced to transmit knowledge of Rome's ancient marbles to the rest of Europe.
Publius Aelius Hadrianus (76–138 AD) was the Spanish-born Roman emperor who succeeded Trajan in 117 AD and reigned for twenty-one years. A Hellenophile, a restless traveller and the first Roman emperor to wear a full philosopher's beard, Hadrian drew back from his predecessor's expansionist wars, consolidated the empire's frontiers (Hadrian's Wall in Britain is his most famous), and rebuilt the Pantheon as it still stands. His bust is among the most elaborately sculpted of any emperor — partly because his reign generated an unprecedented volume of imperial portraiture, partly because the beard gave sculptors more to work with.
Étienne Baudet (c. 1636–1711) was a French engraver working in Paris in the second half of the 17th century, best known for his reproductive engravings after Poussin and after the antique marbles of Rome. His work belongs to the great 17th century project of making the antique portable — disseminating Rome's sculpture through print.
