A print of Atlas bearing the heavens on his shoulders — one of the oldest figures in Greek cosmology, the Titan condemned by Zeus to hold up the sky for eternity.

Atlas was one of the second-generation Titans — the children of the Titans Iapetus and Clymene, brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus. When the Olympians led by Zeus defeated the Titans in the Titanomachy, Atlas was singled out for the heaviest punishment: forced to stand at the western edge of the world and bear the sky (or, in later versions, the celestial sphere itself) on his shoulders. Hercules briefly took the burden for him during his eleventh labour in exchange for the golden apples of the Hesperides, Atlas's daughters.

The figure became, in Roman and Renaissance iconography, an emblem of endurance under impossible weight. Atlas's name also gave English the word "atlas" for a bound volume of maps — Mercator's 16th-century map collection borrowed the Titan as its cover image and the name stuck.
