A print of Étienne Baudet's Athena — a 17th century French line engraving after an antique figure of the Greek goddess, of the kind Baudet and his contemporaries produced in volume to transmit the marbles of Rome to the rest of Europe.

Athena was the Olympian goddess of wisdom, strategic warfare, craft and the city — patroness of Athens, which took its name from her, and protectress of heroes including Odysseus, Heracles and Perseus. Sprung fully armed from the head of Zeus, she is the paradoxical figure of war in its most ordered and intellectual form, set against the blood-simple rage of her brother Ares. Her iconography — helmet, spear, aegis, owl — runs almost unbroken from Greek vase painting through Roman sculpture into Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical art.

Étienne Baudet (c. 1636–1711) was a French engraver working in Paris in the second half of the 17th century, best known for his reproductive engravings after Poussin and after the antique marbles of Rome. His work belongs to the great 17th century project of making the antique portable — disseminating Rome's sculpture and architecture through print.
