A print of John Singer Sargent's Temple of Bacchus — a watercolour of the Roman temple by one of the great painters of the Belle Époque, treated in the loose, luminous wash that defined Sargent's late work.
The Temple of Bacchus at Baalbek, in what is now Lebanon, is the best-preserved of the great Roman temples of the eastern empire — built in the second century AD, enormous in scale, and decorated in such high-relief density that 19th century travellers regularly singled it out as the most elaborately carved classical monument they had seen. Variants of the name were attached during the Grand Tour era to smaller Roman temples too, from Tivoli onward; Sargent's watercolour tradition draws on this whole lineage of travelling painters confronting classical ruins in full sun.
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the defining portrait painter of the late-Victorian and Edwardian era and, in his later years, a restless and brilliant watercolourist. His travelling watercolours through Italy, Spain, the Alps and the Middle East are the most relaxed and painterly body of work of his career.
