A black and white photograph of Michelangelo's David (1501–1504) from the rear — the view most visitors to the Galleria dell'Accademia walk past without stopping. From behind, the composition reads differently: the long line of the spine, the counterpoised hips (the classical contrapposto), the right hand at the hip holding the sling stones.
Michelangelo designed the statue for a viewer walking around it. The front is canonical, but the rear is where the anatomy of the figure is clearest — the weight shifted onto the right leg, the left leg relaxed, the muscles of the back answering the diagonal of the shoulders above. This is the pose of a figure aware of a threat, turning his attention toward something the viewer cannot see: Goliath, approaching from beyond the frame.
Carved from a single block of Carrara marble, the David is the defining sculpture of the High Renaissance and a civic symbol of the Florentine Republic. This rear view, reduced to black and white, lets the carving speak as form alone.
