A print of a Pompeiian villa fresco in the Fourth Style — the illusionistic decorative mode that dominated Roman wall painting from roughly 60 AD until Mount Vesuvius buried the Bay of Naples in 79. A villa interior wall is divided into coloured panels, painted architectural frames and central pinakes holding miniature mythological scenes.
The four Pompeiian styles were classified by the German archaeologist August Mau in 1882 and remain the standard chronology for Roman wall painting. The First Style imitated marble panelling; the Second opened the wall into architectural perspectives; the Third moved toward slim, delicate, decorative schemes; and the Fourth — the final style before the eruption — combined all three, piling architectural fantasy, central mythological panels, and delicate decorative panels into lavishly scaled wall programmes.
Three quarters of the surviving Roman wall painting from antiquity comes from the cities buried by Vesuvius: Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae and the villas of the surrounding Bay of Naples. The finest examples hang today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the warm reds, ochres and blacks of the painter's palette and the confident freehand line come forward as pure surface.
