A print of Pollux of the Dioscuri — one of the Spartan twin brothers, the immortal son of Zeus and Leda whose colossal sculpted type stands at the head of the Campidoglio in Rome as one half of a famous classical pair.

Pollux (Polydeuces in the Greek) was the immortal twin, son of Zeus; his brother Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus. When Castor was killed, Pollux asked his father to share his own immortality with his brother, and Zeus set the two of them together in the sky as the constellation Gemini. In their cult at Sparta and Rome they were patrons of horsemen, boxers, sailors and travellers; sailors sang to them in storms, and the twin flames of St Elmo's fire were said to be their presence at the mast-tops. The great Roman marble Dioscuri — two colossal standing nude youths with rearing horses — survive in several versions, the most famous at the top of the Capitoline stairs in Rome.

The Dioscuri group is among the most-drawn classical sculptures of the entire Renaissance and Grand Tour tradition, standing at the entrance to the Capitoline since the 16th century.
