A print of Walter Crane's Perseus Armed by the Nymphs — an illustration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Three nymphs hand Perseus the equipment he will need to slay Medusa: the winged sandals, the cap of invisibility, and the kibisis — the magic bag that will hold the Gorgon's head.
In Greek myth, Perseus first has to find the Graeae — the three grey sisters who share a single eye and tooth — and extract from them the location of the Naiad-nymphs who guard these divine objects. Only then, armed, can he set out for the Gorgons' lair. Crane's plate holds the scene of preparation — the quiet moment of arming rather than the battle that follows.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) was central to the Arts & Crafts movement and one of the defining illustrators of Victorian children's literature. Other Perseus plates in this series: Gorgons' Lair and Triumphant.
