A print of Walter Crane's Perseus Triumphant — an illustration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Perseus stands in triumph with the severed head of Medusa held aloft, her petrifying gaze now his to direct.
The scene comes at the climax of the Perseus myth: having slipped into the lair of the Gorgons and decapitated Medusa by looking only at her reflection in Athena's polished shield, Perseus carries the head as both trophy and weapon. With it he rescues Andromeda from the sea monster, turns the usurping king Polydectes to stone, and finally presents it to Athena, who fixes it to her aegis. Crane's plate distils the hero's victory into a single vertical of figure and trophy.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) was central to the Arts & Crafts movement and one of the defining illustrators of Victorian children's literature. Other Perseus plates in this series: Armed by the Nymphs and Gorgons' Lair.
