A print of Walter Crane's Perseus at the Gorgons' Lair — an illustration from Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Perseus creeps into the cavern of the three Gorgons — Stheno, Euryale, and the mortal Medusa — shielded by the helm of Hades, which renders him invisible.
The myth assembles Perseus' equipment from divine gifts: winged sandals from Hermes, an adamantine sickle from Zeus, a polished shield from Athena (so he can look at Medusa in reflection rather than directly), and the cap of invisibility from Hades. Crane's plate brings all of it into a single tightly composed frame — the sleeping Gorgons, the hero creeping in, the mirror-shield already raised.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) was central to the Arts & Crafts movement and one of the defining illustrators of Victorian children's literature. Other Perseus plates in this series: Armed by the Nymphs and Triumphant.
