A black and white print of Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa (1545–1554) — the great bronze that has stood under the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence's Piazza della Signoria for nearly five hundred years. Perseus lifts the severed head of the Gorgon above him; Medusa's body lies crumpled beneath his feet, still flowing with blood.
Cellini was a goldsmith by training, and the Perseus was his bid to prove he could work at monumental scale in bronze. The casting nearly destroyed him — in his Autobiography he describes the metal beginning to solidify before the mould was filled, how he threw in his household's pewter plates to save the pour. The final figure, with its ornate helmet, winged sandals and the reflective inscription running down its back, is as much goldsmith's work blown up to life size as it is sculpture.
The bronze was a political commission from Cosimo I de' Medici — Perseus holding up the head of Medusa served as a Medicean warning to the defeated Florentine Republic. In black and white, the bronze's surface detail and the theatrical verticality of the figure come forward.
