A print of a Perseus and Andromeda fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Perseus, still carrying the head of Medusa, rescues Andromeda — the Ethiopian princess chained to a rock as sacrifice to a sea monster — and delivers her to her waiting parents.
Perseus and Andromeda was one of the most popular mythological subjects in first-century Roman domestic painting. The finest surviving example, from the House of the Dioscuri at Pompeii, hangs today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli and shows Perseus leading Andromeda down from the rock after the monster has been slain — a motif that became the model for dozens of Pompeiian variants.
The subject carried a double charge: a rescue from monsters in the heroic-romance mode, and an allegory of marriage as a shared victory over fate. In print, the muted Pompeiian palette — deep reds, warm ochres, blacks — and the confident freehand line of the wall-painter come forward.
