A print of a Pegasus fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The winged horse — born from the blood of Medusa when Perseus struck off her head, and later the mount of Bellerophon in the slaying of the Chimera — was one of the most popular decorative motifs in Roman domestic painting.
Pegasus served multiple symbolic roles on the walls of a Roman villa. In mythological narrative panels he appears with Bellerophon; in more purely decorative schemes he stands alone as an emblem of poetic inspiration (his hoof-strike at Helicon opened the Hippocrene spring, sacred to the Muses) or simply as a graceful flying figure in the lighter zones of the wall. The Pompeiian wall-painters drew him freely, wings sweeping up behind in a single confident line.
The finest surviving Pompeiian Pegasus frescoes are held today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the earth-red and ochre ground and the fluid flight of the figure come forward.
