A minimalist single-line drawing of Patroclus, the companion of Achilles whose death in combat outside Troy is the emotional turning point of Homer's Iliad. The whole figure is carried in a single continuous line.
Patroclus was the son of Menoetius, raised alongside Achilles at the court of King Peleus and bound to him as the closest friend of his life. When Achilles withdrew from the fighting in the ninth year of the Trojan War, Patroclus begged to be allowed to lead the Myrmidons himself — in Achilles' armour, so that the Trojans would think the hero had returned. He drove the Trojans back to the walls and was killed there by Hector. The grief that followed was what drew Achilles back into the war, and what sealed his own fated death at Troy. Whether Patroclus and Achilles were lovers was already argued over in antiquity.
