A print of a Paris of Troy fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. Paris — the Trojan prince whose judgement of the goddesses triggered the abduction of Helen and the decade of war that followed — is shown in his conventional attributes: Phrygian cap, shepherd's crook, the stillness of the herdsman-prince before the storm.
In Roman domestic painting Paris appeared most often in one of two scenes: the Judgement itself, handing the golden apple of discord to Aphrodite in preference to Hera and Athena; and the quieter pastoral of Paris on Mount Ida before the goddesses arrived, when he was still a shepherd raising cattle and ignorant of his royal parentage. The Phrygian cap — the soft pointed hat of Asia Minor — marked him out as eastern and foreign to the Greek and Roman viewer.
The best surviving Pompeiian frescoes of the subject are held today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the warm ochres and red grounds of the Roman palette and the confident wall-painter's line read as pure surface.
