A black and white print of Pierre Puget's Milo of Croton (1682) — the French Baroque sculptor's signature marble, and one of the most dramatic sculptures in the Louvre. The aged wrestler Milo, having thrust his hand into a split tree trunk to pry it apart, is caught when the wood snaps shut on him; a lion pads up from behind, teeth already at his thigh.

The story comes from Greek legend: Milo of Croton was the most celebrated wrestler of the 6th century BC, an Olympic champion six times over, a figure of near-mythical strength. In old age, walking through a forest, he tried to prove his strength still held by splitting a tree that a woodcutter had already started to cleave. The tree closed on his hand, trapping him; a wolf or lion, depending on the source, found him and tore him apart. Puget read the story as an allegory on the limits of human strength — hubris, ageing, the slow revenge of nature.

The sculpture was one of the few Puget works to enter Louis XIV's collection at Versailles; it is now displayed in the Louvre's Cour Puget. In black and white, the torsion through Milo's body and the claws of the lion rising into his flank read as a single diagonal line of force.
