A print of Marchetti's Mars and Venus — a 19th century Italian reproductive engraving treating one of the most-painted couples of the classical pantheon, the god of war and the goddess of love caught in the embrace that was a staple subject of European art from Pompeii onward.

The affair of Mars (Ares) and Venus (Aphrodite) is told, with a certain grim humour, in the eighth book of the Odyssey. Aphrodite, married to the lame smith-god Hephaestus, takes Ares as a lover; Hephaestus hears of it, forges an unbreakable net of bronze, and catches them in bed, then calls the other Olympians in to witness. The gods laugh. The scene was painted by Botticelli, by Veronese, and was one of the very commonest subjects on the walls of Pompeii — Venus disarming Mars, Mars disarming Venus, the two of them at rest together with Cupid tugging at the helmet.

The reproductive engraving tradition to which this print belongs — line-engraved plates after celebrated paintings and sculptures — was the 19th century's primary way of disseminating great art to households that would never see the original.
