A black and white print of Guillaume Geefs' Le génie du mal (1848) — "The Genius of Evil," the Romantic marble Lucifer that sits in the pulpit of Saint Paul's Cathedral in Liège, Belgium. A bat-winged, beautiful young man sits chained, one hand at his chin, the other holding a broken sceptre; a crown and an apple lie at his feet.

The sculpture has a strange history. Geefs' older brother Joseph had carved an earlier version of the subject for the same cathedral in 1842, but that figure was judged by the clergy to be too beautiful, too seductive — the parish priests complained it was distracting worshippers rather than warning them. The first Lucifer was removed, and Guillaume was commissioned to make a replacement. He responded with a figure that was, if anything, even more romantic — a brooding fallen angel in the Byronic mould, closer to Milton's Satan than to medieval devilry.

It is one of the defining images of Romantic-era religious sculpture: Lucifer not as monster, but as tragic intelligence in exile. In black and white, the carving of the wings, the curled pose, and the deliberately classicising beauty of the face come forward without colour.
