A minimalist typographic print of the opening line of Homer's Iliad, the foundational text of Western literature. The poem opens with an invocation to the Muse and a single hard word: mēnin — "wrath." The whole twenty-four-book poem is organised around the anger of Achilles at the Greek commander Agamemnon, and the catastrophic consequences that anger sets in motion across the plains of Troy.
The Iliad is usually dated, in its written form, to the 8th century BC. Whether "Homer" was a single poet, a compilation of older bardic tradition, or the name attached retrospectively to a canonical performance text, remains a question scholars have argued about since antiquity. What is certain is that the opening line has been memorised by Greek schoolchildren for two and a half millennia — and that its compression (muse, wrath, hero, consequence) still sets the template for how an epic begins.
This print holds the line alone, stripped of illustration, as a graphic object. Pair with: Homer's Odyssey (minimal).
