A print of Walter Crane's Hercules and Proteus — the opening plate of the three-part Hercules sequence in Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Hercules wrestles Proteus, the old man of the sea, as the shape-shifting god cycles through lion, serpent, fire and flood in an attempt to break free.
In the myth, Hercules — on the trail of the golden apples of the Hesperides — seeks out Proteus because the sea god alone knows the way. Proteus will only answer questions if he is held fast through every shape he assumes, and the struggle is famous in Greek literature as the archetype of wresting knowledge from something that refuses to stay still. Homer tells a version of the same scene with Menelaus on the beach at Pharos.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) was a central figure in the Arts & Crafts movement; his Hawthorne plates are among the most familiar images of Greek myth in English children's literature. This is Part 1 of a three-part Hercules sequence: Part 2: Atlas and Part 3: Hesperides.
