A print of Walter Crane's Hercules and the Hesperides — the closing plate of the three-part Hercules sequence in Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Hercules stands among the nymphs at the tree of the golden apples, the task of his eleventh labour in sight.

The Hesperides were the nymphs of evening, daughters of Atlas, set by Hera to guard the tree of golden apples the goddess had received as a wedding gift from Gaia. The tree stood at the western edge of the world, and the task of fetching one of its apples was one of the last and furthest of Hercules' labours — part cosmology, part quest-romance. Crane's illustration sets the hero in a decorative glade, the tree almost a tapestry motif, the nymphs composed around it like figures on a Greek vase.

Walter Crane (1845–1915) was central to the Arts & Crafts movement and one of the defining illustrators of Victorian children's literature. This is Part 3 of a three-part Hercules sequence: Part 1: Proteus and Part 2: Atlas.
