A print of Walter Crane's Hercules and Atlas — one of the plates for Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys (Houghton Mifflin, 1892). Hercules shoulders the weight of the heavens while the Titan Atlas walks off to fetch the golden apples of the Hesperides, a brief and precarious exchange.
The episode is the eleventh labour of Hercules. Atlas, condemned by Zeus to bear the sky on his shoulders for eternity, was the father of the Hesperides — the nymphs who guarded the tree of golden apples Hercules had been sent to retrieve. The hero offered to hold up the heavens himself while Atlas fetched the apples, and then, in the cleverest trick of the Hercules cycle, persuaded Atlas to resume the burden just long enough for him to slip out from under it.
Walter Crane (1845–1915) brought his Arts & Crafts sensibility — strong black line, decorative composition, heraldic flatness — to the Greek myths in these plates. This is Part 2 of a three-part Hercules sequence: Part 1: Proteus and Part 3: Hesperides.
