A print of Muller's Hercules and the Hydra — a reproductive engraving of the second of the Twelve Labours of Hercules, the hero's battle with the many-headed water-serpent of Lerna.

The Hydra was a venomous serpent born of Typhon and Echidna that lived in the lake of Lerna in the Argolid. Its defining feature: for every head struck off, two grew back in its place. Hercules overcame it with the help of his nephew Iolaos, who cauterised each severed stump with a torch so that no new heads could sprout, and finally buried the last, immortal head under a great rock. He dipped his arrows in its poisoned blood, which would become the instrument of his own eventual death. The subject was painted and sculpted continuously from archaic Greek vase painting onward, and was a standard of the 19th century reproductive engraving trade.

Reproductive engraving — the 19th century's dominant technology for distributing fine art — translated celebrated paintings and sculptures into line-engraved plates that could be printed in editions of many thousands, carrying great art into households that would never see the original.
