A print of Heracles and Antaeus — the Greek hero wrestling the Libyan giant whose strength renewed itself every time he touched the earth, one of the most sculpturally rich wrestling subjects in Greek mythology.
Antaeus was a son of Gaia (the earth) and Poseidon, a giant who challenged every traveller passing through Libya to wrestle and killed them when he won. His secret: any time he touched his mother Earth, his strength was fully restored. Heracles, passing through on his way to or from the Garden of the Hesperides, figured this out mid-fight, hoisted the giant clear of the ground, and crushed him to death in the air. The subject was a favourite of Greek and Roman sculpture — two male bodies interlocked in struggle, one feet-off-the-ground — and was revived with particular intensity in the Italian Renaissance by Pollaiuolo and Mantegna, and after them by countless bronze sculptors of the 16th and 17th centuries.
The subject is rare in that the moral of the struggle — life on the earth vs. cleverness in the air — is essentially built into its composition.
