A print of Hellas — the classical personification of Greece, the allegorical female figure who represents the Greek nation in the long tradition of Western allegorical art.

Hellas is the Greeks' own name for Greece — and for every Greek-speaking community of the ancient Mediterranean, from Sicily to the Black Sea. The figure of a woman personifying the country, drawn from the long ancient and Renaissance tradition of allegorical female nations (Roma, Britannia, Germania, Italia, Gallia), was taken up with particular force during and after the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s. From that moment, Hellas was painted, sculpted and printed across Europe as a classicising figure in a helmet or laurel crown, often with an olive branch, a shield, the broken chain of Ottoman rule at her feet, or the temple of the Parthenon behind her — a standing figure of cultural and political continuity from the ancient past into the modern nation.

Hellas as allegory is one of the characteristic images of 19th century European philhellenism, shaped as much by Delacroix and Byron as by any single artwork.
