A print of a headless Hellenistic hero torso — the surviving nude body of a classical statue whose head is lost, the kind of muscular Greek torso that has stood in European museum halls since the Renaissance.
The heroic male nude was the defining subject of Greek classical sculpture, carried to its most elaborate pitch in the Hellenistic schools of the late 4th to 1st centuries BC. Figures of victorious athletes, unnamed heroes, personifications and minor gods were produced in volume; most were copied from bronze originals into marble by Roman workshops; most of those surviving statues are incomplete. What remains is often precisely the torso — the part of a standing figure that has the least to catch against a wall, a cart or a breaking load — and the modern history of sculpture has been shaped almost as much by these fragments as by the complete works.
From Michelangelo's famous admiration for the Belvedere Torso through Rodin's entire career, the fragmentary torso has been a generative form for sculpture rather than a diminished one.
