A print of a Greek temple fresco in the tradition of the Roman wall paintings recovered from Pompeii, Herculaneum and Stabiae. A colonnaded sanctuary is rendered in illusionistic perspective on the interior wall of a Roman villa — a classical tholos or portico, opened onto the viewer as if through a window.
This is one of the defining modes of late Pompeiian painting. In the Fourth Style that dominated Roman wall-decoration from roughly 60 AD until the eruption of Vesuvius in 79, painters opened the wall into architectural fantasies — colonnades, sanctuaries, stage sets — that played at both reality and dream. Temples appear both as mythological locations and as simple decorative devices, a way of giving a flat interior wall the depth of a scenic backdrop.
The finest surviving examples are held today at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli. In print, the careful freehand perspective and the muted palette — Pompeii red, ochre, black, white — read as a study in the painter's handling of architectural line.
